Water Fasting & the Ketogenic Diet....



I get asked alot what are the benefits and reasons, why once a week I now water fast.

Well its a good way to get into Ketosis faster (covered below).

I believe its important to give your digestive system a break , but honestly I could write all day about the benefits to your health and how its regenerates new cell growth and changes your brain but for the better. (Very important for Cancer sufferers) 

So I think its best to just post a link that explains it very well.

I was asked to take part in a clinical trial at the brilliant Walton Centre. This was Following my reoccurrence of my tumour. Unfortunately to address the new Terry the terminator, a Glioblastoma Multiform 4 (GBM4). This was/is  to look at the effects the Ketogenic Diet has on the body, whilst undertaking  chemotherapy.

This was/is the first phase to see if we, as patients (only 5 GBM4 patients were picked) could handle the diet whilst in treatment. 

Now this was a BIG decision for me having been on a mostly plant based and dairy free diet. 

After doing my own research, it was something I believed was worth a try.

I thought I had spent the last 12 months as a ovo-vegetarian(vegan that eats organic eggs) since first diagnosis.

I had now relapsed following a routine MRI.  But this time it had progressed into the worst brain tumour you can get GBM4.

So time to change direction and approach.

I accepted to go on the trial with a day to spare.

SO........ what is the Ketogenic Diet?


The ketogenic diet was designed in 1924 by Dr. Russell Wilder at the Mayo Clinic. Despite being highly effective in treating epilepsy, it fell out of fashion due to the surge in new anti-seizure medications in the 1940s.

I could write pages and pages about what the Ketogenic diet is, but I will give a very brief overview and attach a few more detailed links as we go. 

The diet is high in fat, supplies adequate protein and is low in carbohydrates. This combination changes the way energy is used in the body.

It is essentially getting your body to run and be fuelled on solely Ketones. Ketones are a  by product from the fat converted in the liver.

This is when your body is in a state of Ketosis.

Your body uses carbohydrates as it's primary source of fuel and stores the fat on your body and around your organs.

Once in ketosis your body produces Ketones (caution Ketones are bad for pregnant women) 

The big plus I saw with this trial, was the removal of sugar and grains completely. 

There are 3 Macronutrients Fat, Protein & Carbohydrates. As a species we have only started consuming Carbohydrates in the last 100years.

Only one of the Macronutrients as humans we do not need to survive yep you guessed it................ CARBOHYDRATES!!!!! 


I advise you to look, buy or borrow the book The Real Meal Revolution if you are serious.

Its been written buy Professor Tim Noakes (The scientist), Sally-Ann Creed (The Nutritionist) & Jonno Proudfoot (The chef).

This book has the history of the Low Carb , High Fat diet(LCHF), the science behind LCHF and 100's of recipes and cheats to keep you on the right track. I have added a link below to their website.

The book is aimed at the LCHF more than the Ketogenic diet. But it does mention it, and on the main, it is basically the same.


NOW!!!!! Imagine a tumour as its own self sustaining, living structure. It has its own nucleus, blood supply and its main food source, is derived from your blood sugar. I.E Glucose , Glutamine, fructose, Carbs and in a recent study, Acetate.

Acetate is an enzyme produced from alcohol in the liver, when its  attempted to be broken down.

By essentially removing the food supply to the tumour and replacing it with goods fats which will in turn produce ketones.

The Cancer/Tumours  can't use Ketones as fuel and the principal is that, the tumour should either starve it, stop it growing or shrink & kill it..... 


Please forget all the lies of the  70'S,80'S and 90'S. Good fat WILL NOT increase your risk of heart disease , nor will it increase your Bad Cholesterol known as, low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, Your good Cholesterol known as, high-density lipoprotein, or HDL. LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.

Which modified version am I on ?  


There are thousands of versions and variations of the Ketogenic diet . I am on an extreme modified version. I have combined the vegetarian with the meat version. I know only eat Organic turkey ,Chicken , Fish and eggs.

My Macronutrients have a minimum of 120grams of good Fat , 2200kcal, 20grams of total carbs (this is taken up, with any fruit or veg I have ) As I am battling cancer and need to keep my weight up, protein was free.  But to much protein if consumed in excess, and which is not used up, or processed by the body, is converted into glucose.

I worked out I had to consume between 90-130 grams of protein a day.

All the food I have is organic , not processed , good fat and mostly, if cooked I use a medium chain fat , extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil . 

As a result YES!!! my shopping bill has gone through the roof .

But you cant put a price on your health........  

I am in constant contact with The Walton Centre for neurology via Kirsty a dietitian. We have weekly phone calls and now 3 monthly face to face appointments to go over food intake , my bloods and so on....

I was also provided with all the tests for ketosis, guides and a few helpful recipes. 


How do you know if you are in Ketosis and your body is using solely Ketones? 


Well I have to test my urine, with special ketosis testing sticks !! (as pictured) and matchthe colour after 15 seconds. This shows what level of Ketosis I am in. There are 0-Negative , 0.5- Traces , 1.5- Faible, 4-Moyen (KETOSIS) , 8-Fort(KETOSIS) , 16-Fort  (Potentially hyper ketosis.)My opinions/observations  0-3 months in....Well I water fasted the day before I started for 36hrs , this is something I do once in a while and would start to produce ketones as the fuel systems change over.

It took 2 days to get into Ketosis, it can take upto a week. First 2 days all I wanted was food

I never really  wanted to eat anyway!!!, cakes, carbs , sugar!!!

(Sugar gives off the same addictive high chemical, called dopamine in the brain as...... Cocaine.) 


But I craved them rotten. But after that initial period, I lost the cravings for grains, sugars and carbs.

I've  found I have more energy, more get up and go and certainly my mentalclarity and capacity has

improved...Dare I say, to how I was before I was diagnosed 2 years ago.. 

You have to be creative on it.  Researching recipes none stop, is a must in the beginning,  or you

can get sick and tired eating the same things, over and over again. To get round any cravings you

might get. 

I wanted some waffles one day.  As I cant eat grains I made  waffles , Cookies & pancakes out of

Almond flour ,Organic Double Cream and 3 Organic eggs easy!! OR waffles,  again using almond flour, eggs cream ice cold water and organic baking powder.

Theres not much you can drink . But you need to drink a lot of water this helps stop kidney stones. I drink 4litres a day of Kangen Water.  Along with  a host of different Green, red , Soursop, herbal teas. Breakfast tea with homemade almond milk and various detox tea's.

What I have realised is that you still have to live your life, so if its a special occasion I will eat what I want. Now this is once maybe twice a month . As long as I dont go stupid, I can get back in Ketosis within 1-2days max.


**UPDATE** The trial has been that successful, that it has now been opened up to other GBM4 sufferers.

Funding for another 12months has been granted . Once this extra peroid is complete and the data analysed, they are looking at rolling it out in 2017/18, to include looking at the effect the Ketogenic diet has on tumours.

But thats what & why I am doing it for , regardless.


My 3 Month final review was very succesfull my body fat was 9% at it lowest. I added 10cm to my biceps , visceral fat , good & bad cholesterol were all perfect and my balance of macronutrients were the best they had seen.  I have told them I will continue with this diet but will up the carbohydrates to 5g-10g to allow more fruit and veg. This was agreed and I will still stay under their guidance .

I found out about this one like always ..The hard way.

Hyperketosis can occur when you bodies ketones are to high and excessive. Signs of Hyperketosis can include;


Rapid, panted breathing,

Increased heart rate,

Facial flushing, 

Vomiting & dizzy feeling,

Unexpected Lethargy & irritability .

If you experience these test your ketone levels, if HyperKetosis drink a fresh juice or sugary drink . 15minutes later re-test.

Having been on holiday and had a week off the diet after 2 days back on the diet, I decided to do a test , to see if I even had traces of ketones in my blood . I hadn't been feeling to good that day and had a few of the above symptoms.

To my suprise I was +4 or 16-Fort on the test, basically HyperKetosis.

As I was going to bed, I decided to leave it and just go to sleep.

BIG MISTAKE- I woke at 3am, walked to the toilet and was staggering everywhere, I was out of breathe and feeling dizzy .

Next thing I new, I was coming round on the floor. I couldnt stand. My wife ran in sat me up, my head was pounding back bleeding from a cut. She got me a glass of fresh orange and 10minutes later I was fine & stood up where I proceeded to collapse into bed. ONCE AGAIN LESSON LEARN'T.




At my last scan on Friday 5th Feb 2016, I was told my highly aggressive tumour GBM4 was stable and there was no change . But my consultant stated he thought it had shrunk and had now virtually gone.

NOW!!!!! I don't believe there is 1 cure for cancer, but a multitude of approaches needed to defeat it.

I DON'T think the diet has been solely the cause for my tumours regression, but I think it has been one of a few different pronged attacks, I am using to try defeat this. 



The 1st scan on the left was taken at the very start of this journey. Scaned on 05/05/14 & shows a tennis ball sized, low grade Astrocytoma II.

Removed with surgery & no other treatment.

The 2nd scan in the centre at the top, shows the remaining small piece of Terry following surgery.

Scan on the right was On 22/06/15 and shows the new Terminator Terry (GBM4)


The above and lower scan was taken in 21/03/16 . The black mass is just the hole where the tumour was removed . Following a 2nd Brain operation 6 weeks of duel radiation therapy & Chemotherapy.

As you can see there is a tiny spec left of Terry.
